Every family should set aside ONE night a week to do things together as a family.
Monday night might work for you and your family. Maybe Wednesday night will work better -- maybe Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon......... Whatever day and time works best, DO IT!
It doesn't matter if you have kids or not. Spend time together.
It could be a structured evening, or it could be non-structured.
Have one person in charge of "conducting" the evening's events.
Start with a prayer, and then perhaps have someone lead everyone in a song.
Then perhaps, have a lesson on a gospel topic.
Here is a link: (Link 1) to a whole bunch of gospel topics that someone could teach about.
Then have a fun activity of some sort -- a game, a movie, learning how to tie knots -- something that will be fun for everyone.
Here is a link: (Link 2) to a video of a family having an activity of making foil dinners! (Side note -- I don't think I've ever seen a house like theirs, where there's an outside gas fireplace like that! And sorry about choosing a video where he does a LOT of fast movement with the camera.... not my favorite thing about the video... but I like that the kids get to choose what they to put in their own dinners, and that they get to tell about what they put in.)
Let someone perform a piano solo, a juggling act, or something they have learned how to do.
Here is a link: (Link 3) to a kid demonstrating to his family how water can stay in a cup, even though it's tipped up-side-down.
Then have REFRESHMENTS! A TREAT of some sort! -- ice cream, cookies, smoothies, etc....
Then have someone give a closing prayer.
Family Home Evening (or FHE) doesn't have to be perfect. Maybe not everyone will be in a good mood. Still try to get together and do something -- even if it's just for 10 minutes (depending on how old the kids are, and what their attention span is).
Do it each week -- just one night a week.
You will reap the blessings from being together, teaching each other, and working together on a weekly basis. You will be able to create lots of memories of the things you did during Family Home Evening.
